The Square shape  has been used in patchwork and quilting for centuries, mainly because Squares can be so easily assembled in rows into larger quilt sections (no wonder then that 99 % of classic quilt blocks are based on the Square).
 
In English Paper Piecing Squares are often used in light /dark check board patterns or in combination with Octagons or Triangles to create patterns similar to historic tiled church floors.
An all time favourite pattern is the ‘Trip round the world’.
